Monthly Archives: June 2010

Man! It’s been a whirlwind past couple of days! The weeks theme is “no matter what” and it is a journey through I and II Timothy. The first night (sunday) was all about God’s grace. One of the things I appreciate about CIY is their understanding that a vast majority of the students here are already Christians. Of course, not all, but many. So CIY’s efforts are not focused on presenting the Gospel anew every night with a big salvation push on the last night like you would find at other conferences/camps. Rather, they lay out the Gospel and push it really big right off the bat and then spend the rest of the week talking about the true Christian life and God’s call for all of us to be Kingdom workers.

Yesterday (monday) was on “truth”.  The day was spent breaking down the myth that truth is defined by whatever belief system you subscribe to and the whole “to each his own” philosophy.  They taught that Truth is a person and a lifestyle. All the students were challenged to write down 1 name, that they would be talking to about Jesus in 1 week. It was a powerful time for our students to confront the reality that there are many people in their lives that are in desperate need of God’s truth. The Basketball and Volleyball tournament was yesterday as well. We threw together a bit of a ragamuffin volleyball team that got eliminated in a tough, and close first round game (there were some REALLY good volleyball players here).  The basketball team was also eliminated in the first round by a team from boulevard that actually went on to win the whole tournament. In fact, the games were to 15 and the most any team scored on BCC was 6…that was our team. They would have gone a long way in the tournament if it weren’t for the bad first round draw.

Today our focus was “Godliness” and how this Godliness doesn’t just happen on accident. Instead, it comes by tireless training and years of hard work just like an athlete would train for the olympics or anyone would train for their professional career of choice. We talked about how godliness is not just a list of don’ts, but rather it is a pursuit of Jesus and His Kingdom. IT has been a super super great day! Bailey Grufik danced in the alternative which is a talent show held in the main auditorium. She did a such a good job. Immediately  following Bailey’s dance, Fayth Heflin sang amazing grace and also did a tremendous job! Such talent in our group!

Tomorrow we have extended rec say so we get to go back downtown and eat some awesome lunch, drink some awesome coffee, and enjoy an afternoon of zuberfizz (a local root beer/cream soda joint)!

Oh yeah…and some of you may or may not remember a couple of years ago in Tennessee when a couple of dogs got loose on the campus one night and were attacking a some people. CIY handled the situation great and no real damage was done. Well, we topped that tonight. We’re currently hunkered down in our dorms because a bear is on campus…that’s right…bear. Again, CIY handled it great sending a mass text to all youth sponsors telling them to get their groups inside and then campus security/wildlife something rather went to catch and relocate the fuzzy visitor. Youth Ministry…you can’t make this stuff up.

If you think about it, thank our sponsors for investing in your students. We have a hall-of-fame team of sponsors here and just when I don’t think they could impress me anymore, they do. They are doing a tremendous job investing in our students. These are people that are committed to the Kingdom and committed to our students because they absolutely believe in them and in what God can do through them. They are awesome.

We love you all.

WE’RE HERE!!!! (and we have internet access!!!)

Hey everybody!

So sorry we haven’t been able to keep you up to date the past couple of days. The campus wouldn’t let us have internet access until today. But we have it now! So prepare to be updated!

We got here around 11:30 CO time so 12:30 OK time. It was a really good trip. Our AC went out in the bus for a few hours near Amarillo and we never had any audio for our movies. But we toughed out the heat and never really cared about the movies. We had a really good time just hanging out, talking, and playing games the whole way. Our drivers have been great and really organized yet flexible…which is awesome on this type of trip.

When we rolled into Durango we just hung out for the night. Everyone was pretty tuckered out so we all pretty much went to bed. Friday morning we slept in a bit and then had the bus come pick us up and take us downtown Durango. We ate lunch and then had a great photo scavenger hunt around town. I’ll try to get some of those photos loaded up soon.  For now, suffice it to say that the “best guy with a beard” photo part of the contest was pretty funny…but not as funny as watching Preston run around downtown trying to avoid having his picture taken by the other teams (yes, his name was on the list of photo assignments). After that was all done we went back up to campus, ate dinner and had a nice youth group time of worship and prayer in the hoodie weather (hehehe).

Saturday we got up, ate breakfast, and did some awesome team building games. Games like Monster, where the teams of 10 had to get from point a to point b using only 5 legs and 3 arms.  And like machine where the teams had to get together and create a moving appliance (e.g. toaster) out of themselves.  And a lot more. After lunch the guys switched dorms (a bit of a hassle) and by the time we were done it was pretty much time for dinner and a dance party. Boulevard Christian from Muskogee is also here early and every year before CIY they have a big decade themed dance party and they invited us to join. So after having a pizza party of our own we went in and crashed a 50’s dance party…a fun time was had by all.

This morning we had a nice little church service. Always love worshipping together with nothing but the mountains to look at.  The challenge was for everyone to pray the prayer of Samuel in I Samuel 3, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” And to continue to pray that throughout the week. To anticipate God speaking to them and to be willing to accept their role in His story much like Samuel did in I Samuel and like Saul and Ananias did in Acts 9.

We are super excited for the conference to start. Go time in t minus 2 hours. Please pray that God would increase the faith in these students (and in your own life as well) and that we would have open hearts and minds to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

We love you and thank you so much for praying for us!

what (not) to bring

ALRIGHT!!! WHO’S READY TO MOVE (if you wanna, if you wanna, if you wanna)?

A Note about What to Bring and

What not to Bring:

Ladies and Gentlemen:

The time is near.  I can’t believe it. Our week alone with GOD and each other is finally coming to pass. I am so insanely EXCITED and I know you are too. So, just to make sure that we have everything we need, as we head off to Colorado, I have come up with a list of things to bring and things to not bring.

People, please remember that we are not heading to Conference with anything on our minds, except drawing closer to OUR GOD and we must make sure that we do not do ANYTHING that will distract our guys/girls that are going with us on this journey.  I’m going to only mention a couple of things to make sure that you understand what not to wear. If you have any further questions, make sure that you talk with Shanna or me personally.

No’s for the Ladies:  No spaghetti strap tank tops, no shirts that do NOT cover your stomach completely, and we do not want to see your bra straps.  Remember our check rule. Raise your arms above your head and then make sure that your stomach is covered. All shorts must be at mid thigh. Please try and wear tops that are your size, not too tight. Girls, it’s best just to wear regular t-shirts for the week. I promise you, if you do this, you will be more comfortable and relaxed and will be able to focus better on GOD and not be distracted by guys.

No’s for the Guys: No sagging pants. No exposed boxers.  No muscle shirts, no tight shirts. Guys, I want you to remember what the girls have told you, you distract them by what you wear as much as they distract you.

No’s for everyone:  No CD Players, I-pods, MP3’s, Stereos, Cell Phones, Skateboards, skates.

Yes’s for Everyone:  Clothes for 5 days (plus extra).  Bedding, toiletries, extra money, Bible, pens, journals, pray journals.

My final words are what I say every year. CIY MOVE is not designed for you to hook up with a girl or guy. It is designed for you to HOOK UP WITH GOD!  Satan will do everything he can to make that NOT happen, including distracting you with one of GOD’S people. Don’t do it, don’t think about it, and please do not be misled in to thinking that GOD is sending you this “person”. If GOD wants you to be with someone you know or meet at Conference, then it will happen after you come home.

*Remember my plea: STAY FOCUSED*
